Cyber Forensics
The global dependency on technology combined with the expanding presence of Internet has increased the threat of cyber attacks. To prepare ourselves to meet these cyber threats, the Department of Information Technology has funded ERNET India to establish a first-of-its-kind Cyber Forensic Lab equipped with advanced forensic tools at CBI Academy. The project also envisages imparting high quality computer forensics training to the CBI Officials.
The Forensic Lab that is being setup is equipped with advanced forensic tools that are useful in gathering e-evidences and collating the sequence of events from digital equipments, such as computers, laptops, mobile phones, satellite phones and GPS (Global Positioning System) devices. It generates information and evidences that facilitate monitoring and tracking of cyber crimes.
The Lab also facilitates in providing training on cyber forensic analysis and procedure to collect evidences through use of technology to track cyber crime activities. One of the major aims of the project is to train crime investigators across the country, inculcate in them a systematic cyber crime investigation culture with awareness about cyber laws and its implication on cyber investigations and evidence chain management.
The biggest challenge of the project is not the setting up of the cyber forensic lab but the delivery of requisite skill sets to effectively use the forensic equipments for investigations.
