ERNET together with Centre for development of Advanced computing (C-DAC) has completed the Proof of Concept phase of Project GARUDA under which connectivity has been established at 45 academic and research institutions (spread across 17 cities) on 2.4 Gbps high-speed communication backbone to enable these institutions to carry out research and engineering in technologies, architecture, standards and application in Grid computing. ICARNet- an overlay on the ERNET Network-is a program of the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) to interlink all its institutions across the country and provide access to internet, email and digital libraries.274 agriculture, education and research institutions have been connected at varying bandwidths (128 Kbps to 2 Mbps). ERNET has set up and commissioned IP based Video Conferencing and IP telephony System at 23 ICAR Institutes over the ERNET Network. ERNET India is also setting up a secure Data Centre to host education related material, including research papers, theses, and database of the students and teachers of the research and educational Institutions.
