Operation Information

ERNET network is extensively monitored. As a passive measurement, SNMP interface statistics, both bytes and packets per second are recorded and viewed by modified MRTG graphs.

ERNET PoPs continuously monitor the performance of peering, backbone and user links. The measurement includes :

  • Link availability
  • Link utilization
  • Break up of traffic generated by respective sites
  • Scalable, Secure and Guaranteed QoS

The services for which we measure the performance metrics include web, ftp, e-mail ets. The web download session throughputs obtained by the users at the user site are measured. ERNET India generates monthly statistics for :

  • E-mail traffic based on the number of incoming/outgoing mails for every user
  • Spams
  • Infected mails.

ERNIC (ERNET Network Information Centre)

ERNIC provides Internet Protocol (IP address space (both IPv4 & IPv6) and in-addr.arpa domain delegations to its customers. The various activities performed by ERNIC include :

  • Allocate Ips to various PoPs & users (terrestrial as well as SATWAN)
  • Collect information about administrative and technical contact person from each customer location and create NIC handle for them.
  • Update Information about inetnum objects (the range of IP address space described by the object) in the APNIC database
  • Co-ordinate with various PoPs for creating reverse DNS zones on name servers and register the reverse domains with APNIC.
  • Take appropriate actions on the complaints received regarding any illegal usage of ERNET resources.

IP Addresses Allocated to ERNET India

1. IPv4 Address

  • 144.16.0.0/16
  • 202.41.64.0/18
  • 202.141.0.0/17
  • 202.141.128.0/19

2. IPv6 addresses

  • 2001:0E30::/32

3. Apart from this the user shall be allocated IP’s based on the following conditions:

  • The IP’s belong to ERNET and are allocated to the customer free of charge along with ERNET’s bandwidth connectivity.
  • The user will use the IP’s till it has the proportionate connectivity from ERNET. The IP’s will automatically stand withdrawn in case the customer does not have the proportionate connectivity.
  • The user will follow the Indian Cyber Laws and will be responsible for their misuse.
  • The users will have to get ERNET’s consent to advertise ERNET’s IPs through some other ISP.
  • Autonomous System (AS) Numbers

Within the Internet, an autonomous system (AS) is a collection of connected Internet Protocol (IP) routing prefixes under the control of one or more network operators that presents a common, clearly defined routing policy to the Internet.

Originally, the definition required control by a single entity, typically an Internet service provider or a very large organization with independent connections to multiple networks, that adhere to a single and clearly defined routing policy, as originally defined in RFC 1771.The newer definition in RFC 1930 came into use because multiple organizations can run BGP using private AS numbers to an ISP that connects all those organizations to the Internet. Even though there may be multiple Autonomous Systems supported by the ISP, the Internet only sees the routing policy of the ISP. That ISP must have an officially registered Autonomous System Number(ASN).

The ERNET network uses AS number 2697 and for BGP peering with external network. ERNET recommends that any organisation that connects to more than one transit provider should take a public AS number from APNIC.

A unique ASN is allocated to each AS for use in BGP routing. AS numbers are important because the ASN uniquely identifies each network on the Internet.
